Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore

My view out my hotel window last night

My view out my hotel window window tonight

Can I write this post without offending someone? Do any of you love Reno? Well, I don't. I didn't like Miami Beach or Las Vegas, either. So why did I agree to the travel plan to stop over in Reno on our way to California? $50/night, that's why. If I would have thought it through and remembered my feelings while staying in some of America's other glitzy cities I would have realized we needed to continue on to Sacramento tonight. Darn.

The kids haven't been impressed, either. Steven walked in to Circus Circus with Ken to register and get our room keys. It turned out that they had to walk through the Casino to do it and Steven thought it was disgusting. Then, when we entered our hotel room Carmen said, "This isn't exactly the Marriott." No, not exactly.

The all you can eat buffet was soothing. There's nothing like 3 trips to the ice cream bar to make you forget all about the Marriott when you're 8 years old. We filled the rest of the evening spending the complimentary midway tickets that came with our hotel room. It was an educational experience for the kids. I never buy tickets to midway games at the Stampede or Calaway Park, but the free coupons gave the kids a chance to find out how the games are rigged against the players and that the 'first' prize is lame and the game must be played successfully many times to get the big teddy bear. As it turned out Steven won a velour wired flower and Carmen won a small froggy stuffy. Carmen won her prize by beating Chloe out, which has been devastating for Chloe. Steven offered his velour flower to Chloe, but it's just no plush froggy.

As we left the midway with the kids Ken told me that if he goes to hell it will be the midway at Circus Circus Reno.

I know exactly what you're talking about and share those feelings. Casinos and the cities that house them tend to make me feel ill.

I don't like those places either. I remember stopping in Vegas twice, once with friends, once with Keith, on my way home to Mesa from BYU. Ick!

I am really laughing over Carmen's Marriott comment, and Ken's hell comment. Both of them I can completely hear them saying. At least you didn't plan for a few days in Reno, right?

Even though I spent 1/2 my growing up in Vegas I hate the casinos, the feel of them, the midways and especially the smell. Really the city has better things to offer, just not downtown. Although I have never been to Reno so I can't speak about there.

Love the one liners coming from the kids and Ken. Too funny.

My good mail came yesterday. I was thrilled, you are too sweet! Thanks for thinking of me!

We don't enjoy those places either. We lived in Henderson for about a year. And left because we did not like it there. We won the big bear at Circus Circus when we stayed there on our way home from CA. Then we had to find a place to put it in the car. We drove a small Honda. Saving Grace was we only had one child at the time. The bear took up most of the back seat. The bear is long since gone now.

I've been to Vegas 2 times. I loved it the first time and not so much the next time. It was so cheap there that we stayed at NICE hotels. The Vegas Circus Circus was SO much fun. Ceasars Palace was amazing. For a family of gluttens, the food was spectacular. We went to a chocolate factory in Vegas. It was awesome.
I always felt sad when we were in the Casinos though.
I don't want to go again b/c I like my good memories.
Carmen and Ken are so funny.

Oh, you must enter the cities at night. If you enter at daytime it's disgusting.

This is funny to me. Brings back good memories, when I was a kid my family would stop at the Circus Circus buffet on road trips. My mom would sit outside with her Good Housekeeping magazine, prefering to starve.

I like your husband's comment. Big contrast to the out the hotel window pics.

I personally think that LV and Reno are awful places. We used to pass through Las Vegas everytime we traveled from CA to UT - which was quite extensive and I hated every minute of it. I so totally agree with you - hell could be either place for me. Can't wait to see what's next!

I am cracking up! I hate just driving down the street in Vegas. The littles get an unsolicited sex ed! It's smokey, slimey and gross.
I can say we stayed at Circus Circus just once.(that place is noisey too!) we were on our way to somewhere as well -home!
My sista would never say she lived in Vegas, she would tell people she lived in Nevada! She hated the notion.
There is a gorgeous Marriott we like outside of the strip, actually in Summerlin (name of community, not city) that has the casino detached from the hotel -no walking thru a veil of smoke! The bathrooms are huge too!
Happy traveling! ciao

Melanie - I'm sure living in Vegas is totally different than being a tourist on the strip. And Ortensia, I'm sure that part of the problem last night was that we drove into Renon in the daylight.

Yes, I'm liking your Salt Lake pictures infinitely more...and I can't wait until you make it to Portland!

I got lost at Circus Circus in the "biggest little city in the world" when I was six. It still haunts me.

I really don't enjoy anything about that lifestyle. Well...I think Oceans's 11 and Ocean's 13 are pretty entertaining. But, that might just be because Brad Pitt and George Clooney look mighty fine in their suits.

We stayed a night there once also on the way to San Fran from Utah. Not such a lovely drive either.
